Gibson Group: Marie Grypioti
Biography
Marie was born in Athens, Greece where she lived until 2009 when she moved to to Heraklion, Crete to undertake her undergraduate studies. During her studies she undertook a three month placement (Oct 2012- Dec 2012) at the University Paul Sabatier under the supervision of Dr Michel Baltas to work on synthesis of InhA inhibitors and their kinetic evaluations. Her final year dissertation project was under the supervision of Prof. Georgios Tsiotis, trying to understand the proteome of the pathogen bacteria Pseudomonas PhDV1. Different separation techniques were used such as SDS- PAGE, native - PAGE, sucrose gradient separation and IEF in liquid phase. The identification of the isolated proteins took place using MALDI ToF - ToF MS.
In 2014 she obtained her master’s degree from Imperial College London. In her master’s thesis she was focusing on a Chemical Biological Study on DOT1L, a protein essential to the emergence of acute leukemia under the supervision of Dr Matthew Fuchter (ICL) and Dr Rachel Grimley (Neusentis, Pfizer).
Before moving to Warwick to start her PhD she spent six months in Toulouse, France, under the supervision of Dr Michel Baltas and Dr Paola Arimondo, to work on potential DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) inhibitors and compounds with biological activities.
Research Interests
The title of my PhD is “Development of tools to understand nutrient uptake at mycobacteria” under the supervision of Dr Elizabeth Fullam and Professor Matthew Gibson. I will be using a chemical biology approach to understand the nutrient uptake and metabolism in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
