The recent BBC podcast and film give examples of how the teaching behind João’s module Disasters, Resilience and Urban Data is put into practice by The Missing Maps project and Open Street Map.

The module will allow students to engaging in field work to experience how to collect, process, analyse and produce interactive digital maps to visualise urban aspects related to disaster resilience.

The Missing Map project explain why creating their maps remains so valuable;

“Each year, disasters around the world kill nearly 100,000 and affect or displace 200 million people. Many of the places where these disasters occur are literally 'missing' from any map and first responders lack the information to make valuable decisions regarding relief efforts. Missing Maps is an open, collaborative project in which you can help to map areas where humanitarian organisations are trying to meet the needs of vulnerable people.”
