Our Inspiring Women (IWD18 Part 1)
In recognition of International Women Day (yesterday 8 March) we would like to thank all of our inspiring women who make up our Humanitarian Engineering Team. Find out more about each of them and how they are playing a pivotal part in the solution of global humanitarian challenges.
Dr Georgia Kremmyda - Programme Director and Module Leader
Modules: Humanitarian Engineering: Ethics, Theory, Practices / One Humanity; Shared Responsibility / Sustainable Cities and Infrastructures for Emergencies
Georgia is the driving force behind the creation of the Humanitarian Engineering Programmes. Georgia was born in Sparta, Greece and completed her undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD studies at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. For more than 13 years, Georgia shared her professional career between Academia and Industry.
In 2015, Georgia joined the University of Warwick and is the Programme Director of the Humanitarian Engineering programmes. Georgia is the Civil Engineering Degree Leader at the School of Engineering and the Lead of the Environmental Sustainability theme within the Warwick Global Research Priority on Sustainable Cities.
Dr Haley Beer – Module Leader
Module: Sustainable Operations and Humanitarian Supply Chains
Haley is based in Warwick Business School and holds a PhD in Management from the University of Warwick for her dissertation on Social Enterprise Performance Measurement and Management. Her current research activity is focussed on the social processes of measurement, the measurement of social impact, and managerial interventions that improve subjective well-being. Her work has been published in journals such as Journal of Business Ethics and International Journal of Operations and Production Management.
Haley has volunteered on and contributed to several regional, national, and international advisory committees, not-for-profit boards, and social value projects with United Kingdom and Canadian government entities and socially motivated organizations. She has consulted on performance measurement practices for organizations such as the NHS and the Department for Communities and Local Government.
Dr Debbi Marais – Module Leader
Module: An Introduction to Global Health
Debbi is a Senior Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy, demonstrating a thorough understanding of effective approaches to teaching and learning support as a key contribution to high-quality student learning and impact and influence on other colleagues by leading, managing and organising programmes. She has almost 20 years of experience in the higher education environment gaining expertise in teaching and assessment (internally and externally) at under- and postgraduate levels. Debbi originally qualified as a Dietitian and worked in the public sector in South Africa for 8 years. Thereafter she entered academia, at Stellenbosch University in South Africa (11 years), University of Aberdeen (6 years) before moving to University of Warwick.
Debbi's current research activity is focussed on two main areas as outlined below;
- Pedagogical: Technology-enhanced teaching; Employability & Professionalism
- Health: Technology-enhanced health education; Infant and young child feeding; Nutrition transition & Global health
Dr Elena Riva – Module Leader
Module: Water and Environmental Management
Elena is a Senior Teaching Fellow and Director of Undergraduate Studies at the Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning, and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She holds a laurea in Chemistry (Italian MSc equivalent in Chemistry) from Milan University (2007) and a PhD in synthetic Chemistry from Milan University in the pioneering area of flow chemistry (2010).
Elena develops new modules, event and activities for undergraduates and postgraduates that explore complex and global scientific topics and issues creating connections between the scientific disciplines and the humanities.
Hannah Copeland – Academic Projects Manager
Hannah joined the Humanitarian Engineering team in November 2017 and is the first point of contact for anyone interested in the programmes. Hannah’s wider role is to manage recruitment and the practicalities of running the programme, she is there to support all prospective students, current students, and staff.
