Children Lost to Conflict

Mike Penrose, Executive Director for Unicef UK recently wrote a blog entry for the Huffington Post Entitled “In Yemen, Another Generation Is Being Lost To Conflict”. Shockingly it highlights almost half a million children in Yemen are facing the harsh reality of being stripped of their chance for education due to the conflict.

That is equivalent to all the children in Wales no longer able to go to school. Mike notes that of course, the immediate humanitarian response has been to provide shelter, food, and healthcare as well as safe drinking water. The importance of education for a whole generation is critical to the longer term humanitarian response that is required.

What Mike Penrose also draws attention to is that Unicef are currently demanding the protection of schools as safe spaces under international humanitarian law.

We will examine how law might dictate the nature of humanitarian response as outlined in Mike’s blog post. What should be the response of an NGO in times of conflict?
