Image 10 - Hexagonal Neurons
Hexagonal Neurons
Stephen Royle
This image shows nutrient uptake in neurons, nerve cells from the brain. Two neurons are expressing a fluorescent protein so they appear blue. All cells, including neurons, take up nutrients from the outside by a process called endocytosis. This process, shown in gold, is important for cells to stay alive and also allows them to signal to one another. The image was taken on a microscope and then resampled on a hexagonal grid to make an eye-catching picture.
