Actin filaments are a major component of the cytoskeleton, giving structure and mechanical stability to all living objects. This image shows a self-organised network of actin filaments. These were assembled in a test tube and visualised with a super-resolution fluorescence microscopy technique. Scientists extract and purify actin from cells to study their mechanical properties and which factors control their assembly and organisation in a controlled environment.
