Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire Dales
Bolton Priory and the village of Bolton Abbey, are in the Yorkshire Dales on the River Wharfe - a little east of Skipton (OS Grid Reference SE074541, map by Streetmap.co.uk). I've visited twice now - both times during weekend walking trips with Warwick University's Hill & Mountain Walking Club.
The view from the river side, with the graveyard in the foreground:
The nave of the old Abbey (to the left in the following picture) was spared during The Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII to become the Parish Church for the nearby village of Bolton-in-Wharfedale. You might like to see the website for The Priory Curch of St. Mary & St. Cuthbert, which has more details of its history.
There is a bridge, but provided it hasn't rained too much you can also cross the River Wharfe using these stepping stones:
It was raining when I first visited. We got dropped off a little way up the valley, at the car park near Barden Tower (OS Grid Reference SE054576) and then walked south along the Dales Way by the River Wharfe past the treacherous channel called The Stride. The first time I did this walk, we managed to miss Barden Tower itself, which turns out to be on the the west side of the road at OS Grid Reference SE053570 - some grand old ruins, but nothing too exciting.
