Following the announcement of the inaugural Faculty of Science Doctoral Thesis Awards, two winners have travelled from China and Vienna to collect their prizes.

The Faculty of Science held an end of term event on Wednesday 23rd July, where the winners Dr Emanuele Maggio and Dr Xin Lu received their certificates and prizes.

See what the departments had to say about the impact of the student’s work below.

Chemistry

Emanuele Maggio: ‘Theory of the Charge Recombination Reaction Rate in Dye Sensitised Solar Cells’

Professor Martin Wills, Chemistry said: “An excellent thesis containing the results of a study into a new research area, which was independently undertaken by the candidate. The project produced 6 high quality papers in which the candidate was the first author.”

Professor Troisi, Supervisor said: “Emanuele came to Warwick from Parma (Italy) where he graduated in Chemistry to pursue a Master in Applied Mathematics. He then joined his two main interests (mathematics and chemistry) in his PhD project about the theory of dye sensitized solar cells."

Dr Maggio is now working within the X Group at the University of Vienna.

Computer Science

Xin Lu: ‘Efficient Algorithms for Scalable Video Coding’

Department of Computer Science said: “As particular outstanding attributes, the committee noted that Xin Lu's thesis was very well structured, representing a substantial and important research contribution, and that it was ‘elegant and well-presented.”

Dr Lu has been working as a lecturer at the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), one of the top nine Chinese universities in China since December 2013.
