What is the PGCTSS?

The Postgraduate Certificate in Transferable Skills in Science (PGCTSS) is an accredited qualification designed to enable you:

  • to be a successful doctoral researcher undertaking world leading research
  • to improve your research effectiveness
  • to maximize your talents in your future career
  • to understand what you already know and how to use those skills to maximum effect.

Who is it for?

There are two separate courses within the PGCTSS, for PhD students and post doctoral researchers.

Applications are also welcome for the certificate or individual modules from other interested parties (fees may apply).

Is PGCTSS recognised outside of Warwick?

PGCTSS and Researcher Development

Researcher Development is the central Researcher Development Programme. The skills offered by Researcher Development are more generic courses applicable to all students, rather than science based for Phd and post-docs. However, the two programmes can complement each other quite well.

If, for example, you were struggling with certain aspects of say Doctoral Skills 1, you could find an appropriate Researcher Development course that could help your understanding.

The team facilitating the course were very practical and showed examples of how commercialisation of an idea takes place and what is usually the process. The course was very practical in terms of how to focus our thinking and what are the tools and techniques that frame the idea into a business opportunity.
