Student-led curriculum design: students as leaders in professional and apprenticeship education

Students who combine work and study have a dual persona of expert and novice, worker and learner. Can taking a co-creation approach to curriculum design (between student, employer and tutor) broaden, enhance and personalise the student experience? How could the co-creation of module design be used to leverage and disseminate student expertise, for example? What are the benefits and pitfalls of such an approach in terms of learning, engagement and skill development? What are the advantages and disadvantages for employers if students have a say in how to use their newly acquired knowledge and skills in the workplace? What may be the barriers to implementation in the workplace?

In this project, you will build on previous studies into co-creation and use the findings to inform your research (from both staff and student perspectives) into co-creation as it applies to work-based. apprenticeship or professional learning.

Duties and responsibilities

Working with teaching staff for Degree Apprenticeship and Professional Programmes you will have an opportunity to understand how co-creation is currently used in WMG and explore staff perspectives on the benefits and risks in this approach to curriculum design. You will also be responsible for analysing data on student engagement and perspectives on co-creation more widely in the university. Your duties in this project will include:

  • Perform a literature review on the use of co-creation techniques: including advantages and disadvantages for learning; possible barriers to use and opportunities for skill development.
  • Collect primary data on staff and student engagement with these activities, as well as staff and student perspectives on their effectiveness and ease of implementation.
  • Analyse the data, and based on the results, provide practical suggestions on how to structure and manage a co-design project for professional education.
  • Produce a report with the findings of the project.
