High volume joining of Light Alloys - A route to market
Research Group Activity
The WMG Materials and Manufacturing Group focus on the application of materials in a wide range of manufacturing environments. Current project covers high volume joining of light weight alloys for automotive and transport applications. We aim to address the challenges associated with materials selection, manufacturing, joining as well as studying the internal microstructure and properties to improve the performance of the components.
Project Description
The project has investigated multiple aluminium alloys joined to automotive components using Resistance Spot Welding. The next stage is to investigate their strength under quasi-static and high strain rate testing. The applicant will be able to explore a few areas that may interest them. This includes:
1. Finite Element Analysis to simulate and validate mechanical testing or lap shear and top hat structures.
2. Mechanical Testing using quasi-static testing facilities and high strain rate drop tower.
3. Microstructure analysis of welded samples.
4. Consider vehicle design for the right to repair and disassembly.
The aim is to investigate the joining methods for high volumes and automated manufacture. There is an ever increasing need to reduce CO2 emissions worldwide, within the automotive industry this is being achieved through electrification. To offset the weight of batteries within electric vehicles and to improve the efficiency of internal combustion engine vehicles there is the need to reduce the overall mass of the vehicle structure. To this end new high strength lightweight alloys are required which can allow for the down-gauging of components without any negative impact on strength. This project will involve the physical and microstructural characterisation of various aluminium alloys within advanced elevated temperature forming processes to evaluate the potential for their use within automotive applications and the influence of alloying elements on material properties.
