Inspiring Woman of the Month: Jane Fraser

Jane Fraser is a Scottish banking executive, currently serving as CEO of America’s fourth largest bank, Citibank. Jane graduated with a bachelors and master’s degree in economics from Girton College, Cambridge, she also earned her MBA from Harvard Business School in 1994. Prior to joining the bank in 2004, she was partner at McKinsey & Company for 10 years.

Jane became the first female CEO of a major Wall Street bank, paving the way for aspiring females in not only finance, but corporate more generally. Many described it as the ‘step in the right direction’, especially in an industry where very few females hold executive roles and leadership positions.

Before reaching the C-suite, Jane did face struggles with being a young working mother in such a competitive industry. She spoke publicly about feeling “exhausted” and “guilty” from her efforts to manage both a career and a family.

When asked about her leadership style, Jane said “I think being a woman has been helpful,”. “You are a bit different from [other] leaders, immediately you look different. I’ve always enjoyed the fact that you can therefore play the game differently”.

Prior to her role at Citibank, Jane worked in Spain as a junior banker for Goldman Sachs, where she noticed the “dramatic and colourful clothes” local women wore. Jane was fond of how these women were themselves, “they were powerful, and they were feminine”, Jane says.

Jane realizes how her achievements can inspire women on Wall Street. However, it is crucial to not drift the discussion away from her capabilities, determination, and work ethic that led to such an accomplishment.

BAME Women in Economics: Gita Gopinath

Gita Gopinath is an Indian American economist who currently serves as Economic Counselor and Director of Research Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) since 2019. Gita is on leave of public service from Harvard University, where she is the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and of Economics. Gita earned her M.A. from Delhi School of Economics and University of Washington, and her Ph.D. in economics from Princeton in 2001.

Gita’s research is mainly focused on International Finance and Macroeconomics, where she developed the Dominant Currency Paradigm. This model takes into consideration that prices in global trade are predominantly not set in either the producer’s or destination’s currency but are set in dollars. The economists found that when most transactions are dollar denominated, “a currency depreciation is rather unlikely to increase exports.” Gita is the co-editor of the current Handbook of International Economics and previously co-edited the American Economic Review.

Gita says that tapping into a women’s potential is a huge win-win for their empowerment and achieve stronger, more inclusive and more resilient global economic growth. Gita’s emphasizes the significant role of gender equity in the labor market on national income, ‘if women were to participate in the labour force to the same extent as men, national income could increase significantly.’

Gita underlines the important role the private sector plays in ensuring gender equity through equitable pay and implement work-life policies that “support women’s labor force attachment.”

She is notable accredited for making a significant change in the language of Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by replacing the phrase “All men are born free and equal” to “All human beings are born free and equal.”
