Book launch: The Secret Leviathan: Secrecy and State Capacity under Soviet Communism by Mark Harrison

The Soviet Union was one of the most secretive states that ever existed.

For decades it successfully operated under a complex system where information was strictly controlled. But secrecy was double–edged: it raised transaction costs, incentivised indecision, compromised the effectiveness of government officials and eroded citizens' trust.

Join author Mark Harrison for the launch of his new book, in which he explores the power of secrecy to strengthen the authority of the Soviet Union on the one hand and to corrode its capabilities on the other.

This event will include a short presentation from the author with the opportunity for questions and networking.
