CSWG Seminar: "Gender and Heteronormativity in Appearance-Work on Image-Based Social Media"
S2.77

You are warmly invited to a hybrid research seminar entitled

"Gender and Heteronormativity in Appearance-Work on Image-Based Social Media: Perspectives of French Teenage Boys"

featuring Célia Cyrille (CY Cergy Paris Université)

It will take place as follows:

  • Wednesday, December 4th
  • 12.00 to 13.00 (UK time)
  • Social Sciences Building: S2.77

Abstract:

This presentation examines teenage boys' appearance-work on image-based social media. It focuses on their everyday digital practices, specifically the production and sharing of self-images on social media on the one hand, and the reception of images produced by peers on the other. The study involved twenty-six French boys aged between fifteen and twenty, all relatively well-integrated socially and academically. Using a (net)ethnographic approach, the research combines online immersion with in-depth individual and group interviews conducted either in person or remotely. My presentation will explore how the affordances identified by participants on these platforms reinforce gender and sexual hierarchies. To do so, I will analyse the participants' characterisation of the feminine work of appearance (the body, its visibility regimes, and heterosexual seduction) and the spectator role they assume.

Speaker Bios:

Célia Cyrille is a research student in the “École, mutations, apprentissages” group at CY Cergy Paris Université and a visiting research student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Warwick
