FAQs / Important information

It is the applicant’s responsibility to understand expectations, requirements and key dates. Please read the following carefully. The induction is to provide you with the tools necessary to begin your mentoring relationship and to ensure you have all you need to make the most of the programme. It also demonstrates your commitment to your matched mentor.

To avoid any possible confusion WBS Mentors are not:

  • Recruitment consultants (there to find you a job or make connections)
  • Providers of contacts or a network, or an introductory service
  • Careers/business advisers

Mentors are there to offer an unbiased viewpoint and to help guide you through your career path.

How are Mentees and Mentors matched?

Mentors first have the opportunity to select their preference of Mentees from a de-personlised list. WBS sense check those and then will match the remaining Mentee on our own criteria.

What criteria does WBS match on?

WBS will look at your next step (eg; student to first role or move to senior management), then look at the organisational environment (eg: SME or Multinational), then job function and above all it will look at your aims, objectives and what you wish to achieve from the two year mentoring programme. We do not necessarily match on geography or sector but will do our best to have your geographically close if we can.

Do I have to attend an induction?

Yes, it is a condition of the programme for all Mentees to attend an induction. Attendance is monitored.

Who will be at induction?

The induction will mostly consist of mentees, with a small number of new mentors as well as existing mentors who wish to refresh their learning.

Do I need to attend an induction if my mentor is not attending?

Yes, all mentees need to complete an induction. Only those attending the face-to-face induction will receive a copy of their mentor profile and also have the opportunity to meet their matched mentor. Even, if your mentor is not coming we strongly recommend joining the in-person induction, if you can. Those attending the remote inductions will all be formally connected with their mentor via email once induction is completed.

Where can I find information about the face-to-face at The Shard?

for more details go to: Face-to-face: on what to bring, meeting your mentor, what to expect on the day and further information

Why do I have to attend an induction?

The award-winning programme quality is key to its success. The induction ensures that all mentees understand what is expected of them, it equips them to make the most of their mentoring relationship and to help mentees achieve what they want to from the programme. It also demonstrates a commitment to their matched mentor and to the two-year programme.

NB: See below video from previous mentee; even though this focuses on a face-to-face induction the essence and the importance of the induction is the same:

What is covered at induction?

Through experience from past participants, the induction centres on tools to make the most out of your mentoring relationship. The session will include ability to ask questions, group 'break-out' work and case studies. It will include:-

  • Mentee/Mentor panel – hear from past participants, ask questions
  • Role Play* – discuss/answer questions
  • How to be effective - mentoring templates/frameworks
  • Expectations: responsibility of mentees and mentors, contracting, boundaries
  • Mentoring Support – where to turn if you need help
  • Cultural Awareness – appreciate differences ; attend/watch webinar, case study/break out groups

What pre-work do I need to complete prior to the remote session?

An email will be sent 3-5 days before your induction containing necessary links and details:-

  1. Pre-reading information - short overview
  2. Watch a short Role-Play* video and questions to answer
  3. Cultural Awareness piece.

During induction you will be asked to answer questions, participate as a large group as well as in smaller break out groups.

How does the online session work?

The remote session is conducted via wbsLive where full participation is required. Pre-induction information will be sent, including a video, that we ask you to watch and provide feedback during the session. The session will cover contract, boundaries, cultural awareness/differences, how to be effective, mentee/mentor panel, escalation routes, Q&A and other helpful tips to equip you to have an effective relationship. Group work will take place during the session.

Are sessions recorded? What if I'm late?

Attendance is monitored throughout. The session is recorded however this can only be shared with those who have completed the induction, those unable to commit to the 2 hours, or arrive late, may be asked to re-join another session. We require this level of commitment to ensure the quality of the scheme for all participants.

How do I join the remote induction? Where is it?

The induction will be hosted on wbsLive. Full joining instructions will be emailed out 1-2 days beforehand.

What do I need to join wbsLive?

Join 10-15mins prior to the prompt start. Ensure emails / phones are switched off to stop any interruptions and located in a quiet place (as best you can at the moment). It is best accessed using Chrome or Firefox (not IE/Edge), with a good internet connection, via laptop/PC, ideally with headset and earphones. Do not join using phone, it has limited functionality. We also recommend switching off skype or other video apps, as they may hinder quality.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), when do I sign?

It is a condition of the programme for Mentees to sign/return the Memorandum of Understanding, (MoU) This contains data privacy and policies of the scheme. This must be signed before we can send pre-work in readiness for your induction. A separate email will be sent requesting you to sign / return.

I can no longer make my induction date? What shall I do?

Notify us immediately at mentoring@wbs.ac.uk and we will reschedule. WBS can then let your Mentor know your new induction date.

When will I learn who my Mentor is?

You will learn who your Mentor is after your induction. We are unable to disclose Mentor details prior to your induction. All relationships will be formally connected via email after your induction. Each matched pair will receive a joint email that includes; a contact plan, their Mentee / Mentor profile, and helpful mentoring tools / templates.

How do I contact my Mentor?

All is explained at induction.

Mentee Profile

Your Mentor will receive a copy of your Mentee profile. This will include your contact details and photo and is primarily based on your application responses. NB We are unable to alter it at this stage of the process.

Mentor Profile

Each Mentee will receive their matched Mentor's profile. The profile will include a little background information as well as answers to questions directly relating to the Mentoring programme. You may find that the Mentor profile does not include their full and comprehensive background of experience; as their experience can be quite exhaustive. You will receive a copy of the profile when we formally connect you via email after your induction.

Virtual Mentoring

Now more than ever, we are familar with virtual meetings. We strongly advocate video virtual meetings, to meet 'face-to-face' and when/if in-person meetings are possible, take whatever opportunity you can to meet in person.

Where do I go if I have any further questions?

Contact mentoring@wbs.ac.uk or the Global Programme Manager donna.curtis@wbs.ac.uk.
