WBS Short Term International Bursary 2023-24

Apply for a bursary of up to £1000 to undertake a short term international self-sourced experience of your choice this academic year!

  • Study placement, e.g. summer schools.

  • Attending an event that will contribute to academic or professional development, e.g. a conference related to your area of development.
  • Research opportunities, e.g. attendance at UG conference or undertaking a structured research project through an overseas university or research centre.
    • Independent primary research is not supported by this scheme.
  • Volunteering opportunities.

This funding is not available to support students on Warwick run programmes or those undertaking an independent cultural trip. It must be a structured opportunity.

What costs can the bursary cover?

The WBS Short Term International Bursary can provide up to £1000 towards the following costs associated with taking part in a structured short international experience

  1. Tuition/registration/application/programme fees for activity [virtual or in person experience]
  2. Accommodation during the international experience [in person experience only]
  3. Travel costs (return flights and associated costs, e.g. airport transfers) [in person experience only]

Who is eligible to apply?

To be eligible for this bursary you must:

  • Be a fully registered WBS UG student (finalist students not eligible) undertaking an opportunity of a minimum of 2 days in duration, and a maximum of 4 weeks removed, this must be within Summer vacation period.
  • Priority will be given to students who have not yet undertaken an international opportunity during their time studying at Warwick.
  • Have an annual household income, as assessed by Student Finance England of £35,000 or below.
  • Be resident in the UK and eligible to pay fees at the home rate.
  • Have applied to www.gov.uk/studentfinance for assessment for financial support and be in receipt of a Government Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan for the 2023-24 academic year.

Applicants must also satisfy at least one of the following criteria to be considered:

  • Having spent time in local-authority care.
  • Living in a low participation neighbourhood (POLAR 3, quintile 1) or an area which has a high level of deprivation (Index of Multiple Deprivation, 0-20%).*
  • Attended a school where average performance of students achieving 5 A*-C GCSE including English and Mathematics was below the national average and/or attended a school/college with below the national average performance at KS5.**
  • Attended a school or college with above national average entitlement/eligibility to Free School Meals.**
  • Being a first-generation entrant to higher education (i.e. neither parent has attended university).

Application Deadline 2023/24 = Friday 26th April 2024 (12pm GMT)

Final deadline for successful applicants to provide evidence of place in order for funds to be released: Friday 14 June 2024 (12pm GMT)


You can apply for the bursary before or after you apply for the opportunity. However, please note that if you are successful in your bursary application, no funds will be released until you provide evidence of your confirmed place.

It is only possible for students to receive funding support from one university funding source in the same academic year. If you receive funding for Warwick in Africa, URSS, or the Work Experience Bursary you are not also eligible for WBS Short Term International Bursary funding.

If your opportunity is more than 4 weeks in duration then you must apply for Turing Scheme (Short Term Mobility) funding instead. You cannot receive funding support from both WBS Short Term International Bursary AND Turing Scheme (Short Term Mobility) towards the same opportunity.

Students are ONLY eligible to receive funding towards ONE Short Term Mobility Experience this academic year.

Please note, if you receive Warwick in Africa, URRS, Work Experience Bursary you are not also eligible for WBS Short Term International Bursary funding.

How to Apply?

  1. Undertake independent research and decide what opportunity you are interested in - apply direct. Some ideas of opportunities can be found at the following link - Short Term Mobility OpportunitiesLink opens in a new window.
  2. Complete and submit the Application FormLink opens in a new window.
  3. Review and complete the attached Risk Assessment FormLink opens in a new window to attach to your application form.
    • This is a self-assessment of the risks associated with your proposed activity. It does not need to be signed off by anyone else.
    • Please leave the end of the form blank besides your signature.
  4. Arrange for your referee to complete the Reference FormLink opens in a new window - this should be someone from your academic department.
    • Please note the reference will form part of the scoring of your application and it is your responsibility to contact your referee and ensure your reference is completed in time.
  5. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of your application by the end of May 2024.
  6. If you are successful...
    • You will be contacted by e-mail to sign a contractLink opens in a new window accepting the bursary, provide proof of your place/activity and submit your bank details (to expedite receipt of the bursary you may wish to pre-submit your bank details via eVision).
    • You will be asked to complete an impact statement or promotional video showcasing your experience.
