IntoUniversity
The University of Warwick is proud to call the Midlands our home. That’s why we’ve partnered with IntoUniversity to fund two outreach centres; in the heart of Coventry and East Birmingham.
Young people growing up in Britain’s least privileged neighbourhoods have always faced an uphill struggle. The pandemic has made the challenge tougher, with months of lost learning.
With your support, we are enabling more people to overcome the barriers to higher education and professional careers, caused by poverty and educational disadvantage.
IntoUniversity offer a welcoming home-from-home for young people to learn, explore and succeed. Each local centre offers a programme including after-school study sessions and one to one mentoring. Young people aged seven and up can realise their ambitions, achieve their academic potential and develop vital skills.
2024 marked the fifth anniversary of the Coventry centre. Since opening, the team has supported over 4,000 young people from the local community. Over 400 students from the centre have gained a place at university.
This autumn, Warwick and IntoUniversity are joining forces with University College Birmingham to open a new learning centre in East Birmingham, a city that has some of most disadvantaged places in the UK. Birmingham is one of twenty local authorities in the UK where residents are most likely to experience destitution (Joseph Rowntree Foundation, 2022). Notably, 43% of the city’s population lives in the 10% most deprived areas nationally (Birmingham City Council, 2022).
The centre will work with local schools, universities, and businesses to provide a range of support services designed to foster ambition for higher education among local students.

Simran's story.
What started as a search for homework help soon turned into a life changing experience. The Coventry Centre offered a supportive environment and a range of support – from philosophy classes and photography clubs, to tutoring and funded visits to campus. Simran could imagine herself thriving in a university environment.
“When I first came to IntoUniversity, I could not have anticipated the level of support I would be receiving. I was getting more than just support with my homework; I began to realise that this was a place where people truly cared about me. It gave me the opportunity to grow in confidence and to share new experiences with people I can now call my friends. IntoUniversity feels like a family.” - Simran, Politics and International Studies.
