Meet Moses Khoza: Learner

Moses

Warwick Volunteer Claire tells us about one of her star students, Moses, from Alexandra, South Africa

Moses is one of the brightest students in my class, always the first one to understand new concepts and explain to his classmates. I asked him to come outside and sit with me during lunch break under the tree to hear his story.

“I have a little brother, he is 10 years old now and both of us live with our mum. My Dad left us after my baby brother was born so I’m trying to do my best to look after him like a father and set a good example. He provides me with all the motivation to study and be successful. One day I want to repay my Mum for not giving up on us by getting a successful job and making her proud. I want to be an Engineer and design skyscrapers and bridges.

I asked him what he’d enjoyed about learning, a huge smile appeared on his face:

“Ma’am, you really changed up things a lot in terms of teaching styles, with you here, my friends and I really look forwards to your lessons because of your outgoing and patient personality and lively teaching style. We really hope you could stay here for good.”

I could notice how much more effort Moses was putting into work after our chat. He’s been doing work outside the syllabus and asking me to correct it for him.

He is just one student from my class, I’m sure every student has got their own story to tell.
