Meet Abbey South: Student Volunteer

Abbey

Abbey volunteered at Sua Secondary in Morogoro, Tanzania:

When we first arrived at the school, walking into a classroom full of learners and teaching them for almost an hour and a half straight was terrifying - but I soon learned to grow in confidence.

I will always remember one particular learner, Joyce. She was the sweetest young girl with a smile that lit up the classroom. Sadly her English level was low compared to most of her classmates. Every lesson, once I set the class off on a task, she would immediately raise her hand and say ‘madam, I don’t understand’, so I would explain the task to her again and let her try to tell me the correct answers. As the weeks went on, she started getting the questions right first time, and eventually she didn’t need my help anymore. It's students like her that just need a little special attention to push them that bit further, and I am so happy I was able to do this.

My time in Tanzania was so much more than just being a volunteer teacher, I was also a friend to many learners and teachers. Sharing experiences with them really changed my outlook on life - I was able to meet so many different people, be inspired and learn so many things. I realised that despite the cultural differences, we are all the same."
