Professor George Christou appointed Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Europe

Professor George Christou has been appointed as Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Europe) with immediate effect. In his new role, George will work closely with Professor Michael Scott, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International), to lead with our engagement with the EUTOPIA alliance, extend and deepen our relationships with European university partners, and to pursue opportunities for funding, student mobility, and European research and teaching collaboration.

Photo of George ChristouGeorge Christou has been a Professor of European Politics and Security in the Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS), University of Warwick, since 2016. He joined PAIS in August 2005, where he has undertaken several strategic management roles over the years, including as Director of Research Degrees and Director of External Affairs. George was also a member of Warwick’s European Advisory Board after 2016 and has represented the University of Warwick on the steering and advisory committees of major European conferences organised in collaboration with key partners.

George obtained his MA, PhD and Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education at the University of Sheffield. He has taught EU policymaking, EU integration and Europe and the World modules at postgraduate and undergraduate level for over 25 years, and he has published widely on issues of European Union (EU) policy, politics, security and foreign policy. George is the Editor of Palgrave's New Security Challenges Series and has extensive experience of collaborating with colleagues in Europe and globally through numerous EU funded projects. He has engaged with a range of stakeholders in communicating and disseminating findings and delivering education and training and he is also a member of a number of EU and European security and policy related academic advisory and expert groups.

On being appointed Professor Christou said;

This is an opportunity to work with colleagues in order to build on the impressive work done thus far in grounding our European presence and identity in concrete actions and successful collaborations with European and global partners; and to ensure that we continue to innovate and deepen across our research, education and student mobility engagements and offerings to realise our European and international strategy ambitions”.

George has extensive experience in securing EU research funding, as well as collaborating with colleagues in Brussels and across our EUTOPIA partners. I am looking forward to working with him and colleagues across the University as we deepen our research, education and student mobility engagement across Europe, make the most of the UK’s re-association with EU Horizon funding, develop further the strategic place of the Warwick Venice Centre, and continue to support educational transformation and collaborative research in Ukraine.”
