In Memoriam: Professor Margaret Archer
We are deeply saddened by the death of Professor Margaret Archer, who spent much of her academic career at Warwick.
Alice Mah, Head of Sociology, said:
"Margaret will be remembered and deeply missed by many. She was an internationally recognised sociologist, whose important work on critical realism, social ontology and social theory influenced many scholars and students at Warwick, in the UK, and around the world.
Professor Archer spent most her academic career at Warwick: she joined the Department in 1973 as one of its first appointees, was promoted to Professor in 1979, and served the Department and the University in various roles and capacities, including as Head of Department, until her retirement.
Among Margaret’s many achievements, she was the first woman to be president of the International Sociological Association (1986-90). She was also awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Sociological Association, in recognition of her extraordinary contributions to the development of sociology in Britain.
We mourn Margaret’s loss and cherish her important role in our history as a Department and as a University."
