Athena SWAN awards success for Warwick

Athena Swan logoWarwick departments have won four Athena SWAN awards this year, recognising our commitment to advancing women's careers in STEMM academia. The School of Engineering and School of Life Sciences both achieved Bronze department status, the Chemistry department retained its previous Silver status, and Warwick Medical School was the recipient of the Silver department award for the first time.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held at The Royal Society of Edinburgh on Thursday 6 June 2013.

About the Athena SWAN awards

The Athena SWAN Awards recognise success in developing employment practices to further and support the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) departments in higher education. Awards were achieved by 35 different institutions across the sector.

The awards have been running since 2005, recognising the commitment of the higher education sector to addressing gender inequalities, tackling the unequal representation of women in science and to improving career progression for female academics. A total of 176 awards have been presented at bronze, silver and gold levels since the awards began.

Warwick's successes

Silver department award - Warwick Medical School (new) and Department of Chemistry (renewal)

Silver awards recognise that in addition to institution-wide policies the department has a significant record of activity and achievement and has identified particular challenges, has implemented activities and can demonstrate their impact so far.

Bronze department award - School of Engineering and School of Life Sciences

This award recognises that in addition to institution-wide policies the winning department has identified particular challenges and is planning activities to address these in the future.

Annie Young, co-lead for the Welfare and Communications Group at Warwick Medical School, said:

The whole Medical School is delighted. The Silver award (which was only given to two medical schools in the UK) demonstrates our ongoing commitment and action to improve the working lives of both women and men, in particular, in supporting women to reach the very top of their profession’.
