Monash Green Steps programme at Warwick

Green Steps is an award-winning sustainability educational programme at Monash University, which has been running since 2000. As part of the Monash-Warwick Alliance, a Green Steps pilot was successfully run at Warwick last year.

We are now in year two: 13 Warwick students with an interest in sustainability have been selected to take part in an intensive and hands-on training programme delivered by Mark Boulet, Green Steps Programme Manager of Monash Sustainability Institute in Australia, and David Robertson, Green Steps Trainer.

The application process was very competitive, only 15 applicants were successful out of 76 applications and 13 students have now started their training:

Antonia Antoniou, Ibtehal Attaelmanan, Jonathan Escalante-Phillips, Alison Garton, George Godfrey, Joshua Green, Thomas Houiller, Elaine Meskhi, Leena Payyappilly, Chanbeen Ro, Rosina Simmons, Nicole Sourry, Joshua Wyatt.

Their current background includes Economics, Maths, Law, International Management, Politics, Medical Sciences and Engineering. They all have an interest in changing people's behaviours with regards to sustainability and are keen to take on this voluntary, extra curriculum training.

  • Between 1-5 July, students are learning how to carry out water, carbon and waste audits at University House. Professor Nigel Thrift, VC at Warwick, will be visiting the students on Thursday 4 July.
  • Between 8-13 July, the students will be split into five groups to work on five sustainability projects including helping Estates assess their water use and studying Scarman's energy consumption. They will be asking questions to members of staff and we thank you in advance for being ready to give them some of your time.
  • The programme will be finalised with a 15 days hosted sustainability project taking place mainly in local businesses and to be completed by 11 October 2013 at the latest.

The Green Steps programme is currently running in eight Australian Universities and Warwick is their first international partner offering the programme. Over 850 students from 8 Australian universities have completed Green Steps, working in partnership with over 450 organisations. Green Steps is putting together a 3 years business plan to take the programme forward at Warwick.
