In Memoriam: James Murphy

It is with deep sadness that the University reports the death of undergraduate student James Murphy in a kayaking accident while on holiday in New Zealand. James was entering the third year of his undergraduate philosophy degree at Warwick. He was on an exchange to Monash our partner university in Australia.

The accident involved a number of students from Monash and Warwick who had taken the opportunity to have a holiday in New Zealand during the Australian half term break. University of Warwick staff are in close contact with our colleagues at Monash, who are giving assistance to all the Monash-Warwick alliance students who have been involved and their families. Monash staff are also offering support to the many friends of the students involved as those friends return to their studies at Monash at following the Australian half term holiday.

Warwick’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Nigel Thrift said:

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of all the students involved in this accident. We are immensely grateful for the support and assistance being offered to the students and their families by our colleagues in Monash University.”

Monash and Warwick staff and support professionals are already in contact with some of the students who were close to James. If you would like to speak to someone at this time, there are a number of support services available. The Student Support Services website -
gives more details.
