Life through lockdown: Stories from the community

This year has been unlike any other in most of our living memories. In March, as a nation, we entered into ‘lockdown’ for the first time in our history.

For many it was a daunting prospect – loneliness, added stresses and worry about friends, family and the virus were issues for many of us. Lockdown also brought opportunities to do things differently or get involved in local communities.

Capturing memories

A volunteer group from across the University were keen to collate memories and experiences, to help celebrate the connections, common experience and the diversity of this shared time.

People from across the Warwick community have shared what they did during lockdown, from Estates colleagues redecorating a primary school in Leamington, through to teams and individuals finding something that makes them smile during difficult times.

How you can get involved

As 2020 continued, many of us have needed to do everyday things very differently, or we’re looking forward to very particular things when all of this is finally over. So:

  • How have you marked life events differently this year?
  • How have you stayed connected?
  • What are you most looking forward to after Covid?

Volunteering

Many in our Warwick community also saw this time as a challenge; a chance to step up their volunteering and actions in local communities, towns, cities and our region more widely. As an institution, being a good neighbour was one of our four key priorities.

At the start of lockdown, the Vice Chancellor urged us to play our part in our communities in whatever ways we could, whether that meant running prescription pick-up services, checking in on neighbours, or volunteering at local food banks.

You can read more of their stories on our Community web pages.

Although first lockdown is over, and we’ve now reached the end of recent national restrictions, there are still trying times ahead. Many of you will still be working hard to make the lives of those around you a little easier. So please do keep telling us about the positive things you have been doing, or plan to keep doing over the coming weeks and months.

Please share your experiences with us here.
