There’s no such thing as a typical day, but, in brief:

My current job involves working within the small WRAP (Warwick Institutional Repository) team in the Library, co-ordinating with Warwick academics and researchers and giving them advice and support. We look at their research output (publications etc.) investigating issues such as copyright, with the aim where possible of making the full text of their scholarly publications available as Open Access in the repository. This work supports the Research Excellence Framework and as such contributes to the University Strategy.

To date, my favourite project here would be the creation of BiteWise information videos for last year’s International Open Access week.

I've worked in several other posts withing the Library; in Customer Services as an evening and weekend supervisor, in Academic Services supporting the Subject teams and in Academic Services Development looking at innovations and developing resources to enhance the work of the division. I've also worked as the Open Studies Librarian liaising with The Centre for Lifelong Learning in supporting their courses, and I was employed for seven years by the Warwick Association of University Teachers co-ordinating the Warwick membership.

In my time at Warwick, the biggest change I’ve seen is:

The massive growth of the University and the number of students. Linked to this the resulting increase in the number of buildings and decrease in the green spaces. There has been a wonderful widening in ethnic diversity in the student population.

In the wider HE sector...

I am extremely concerned about very recent press coverage regarding the ramifications for universities of the UK leaving the EU, how this will affect our researchers, our research collaboration and funding, and in particular the effect on our international students and researchers in future.

Warwick’s unique because...

It is situated on a somewhat rural campus and not in the middle of a town, in many ways a much more pleasant environment. Also it has performed very impressively compared with other 1960s universities.

The best thing about working at Warwick is...

Again, the people. Those I work with in the library and the international and ethnic diversity of Warwick’s students.

If I could change one thing at the University, it would be...

I think we would benefit from a more modern library building, one more appropriate for current ways of learning and studying than those of the mid-sixties. I think it was excellent when it was built but is no longer adequate.

Language classes, Modern Greek and French. A wonderful way to get to meet people from outwith (and within) the University who have similar interests.

I've been to see Warwick productions of West Side Story and Sweeney Todd, both of which were excellent. Royal Philharmonic Orchestra concert – fantastic! Various lectures and discussions, including Question Time.

We sometimes use Xananas if we are going to an event at the Arts Centre. The food is good but I feel it is overpriced considering students are to a great extent the ones who are likely to use it.

I usually travel to campus by...

I used to come to work by bike but currently am sharing a car. Cycling was easier as avoided the horrendous traffic and parking issues. I do however feel improvements could be made to make cycling on campus safer, for example ensuring all new roads have quality cycle paths. I feel the effect of so many cars on the environment (and of course parking) are serious problems so everything possible needs to be done to encourage people to cycle or walk.

The Learning and Development Centre for a large variety of work-related courses. In addition I have attended many courses run by IT Services and many sessions run in the Teaching Grid. What I've learnt I have used in my work at Warwick.

My favourite place on campus is...

Tocil wood. So peaceful and a lovely place for a walk.
