Long Service Awards profile: Joan Hibbert

Name: Joan Hibbert

Job title: Estates Service Desk Operator (since February 2017), previously Security Officer

Department: Estates

Number of years at Warwick: 20

There’s no such thing as a typical day, but, in brief, my job involves...

My new role in the Estates department is to receive, record and distribute fault/defect reports to the relevant Estates Trades Teams. I work within a busy, small team, well led by Alison Easingwood and Alan Warwood. It is sometimes difficult to meet customer expectations as people's perceptions differ so greatly. We have to be acutely aware of how situations can impact on University users and the wider community, and ultimately the reputation of the University. It's a great team, I really do enjoy my role. We NEVER have typical days, and a sense of humour is essential!

Prior to this role, I was a Security Officer and had the privilege to work with some really amazing people during my 19 and ¾ yrs on the Security Team.

My most memorable moment at Warwick has been...

without doubt - attending the Security Officer of the Year awards 2009 in London, where my colleague Harry Mangat and I were finalists for our actions thwarting a burglary at the Arts Centre. It was a great evening.

In my time at Warwick, the biggest change I’ve seen is...

growth, what felt like a village when I started 20 years ago now feels like a small town/city.

Warwick’s kept me here because...

Considering I only intended to stay for a year 'as a change'! I have and still do work with some great people in a fantastic environment. I do feel a genuine sense of belonging to something big here at Warwick.

At the moment I’m really enjoying...

getting to know the accommodation/housekeeping teams and the trades. Getting to know each other with face to face visits when time allows and appreciating/understanding the demands they face on a daily basis. A bonus is, I still get to speak to my ex Security Team when they report faults.

I've only just realised...

just how many people are related who work here - generations! I actually feel 'a bit of an orphan' but suspect that if I try hard enough I will probably find at least a distant cousin who works at Warwick.

Warwick’s unique because...

of its 'completeness', it is teaching, learning, work, home and social space to so many.

If I could change one thing at the University it would be...

to 'magic' the resources to provide a 24hr medical and wellbeing drop-in centre solely for students. It could provide a great platform for health/lifestyle information and support.

I recently went to see...

Warwick Fused at the Arts Centre - my partner and I loved it.

I usually travel to campus by...

Yes I'm a baddie! My own car. I do like my comforts. Argent Court is well served by the new Lynchgate Car Park and I'm a member of the Staff Permit Scheme.

My favourite place on campus is...

The old apple orchard at Gibbet Hill.
