Long Service Awards profile: Janice Wilding

Name: Jan Wilding

Job title: Internal Auditor

Department: Secretary to Council’s Office

Number of years at Warwick: 20

There’s no such thing as a typical day, but, in brief, my job involves...

I have worked in Internal Audit at the University for 20 years – a long time in one area but the diverse nature of the work keeps it fresh. As a function we strive to help the University achieve its operational, reporting and compliance objectives. The University keeps expanding, taking on new ventures, having to comply with more regulation, so there is always something new to look at. The work can be challenging, getting to grips with a new area very quickly – over the years I've greatly appreciated everyone’s patience. The best part of the job - I’ve had the privilege of working with great people from the academic, commercial and administrative sectors across the institution.

My most memorable moment at Warwick has been...

The visit to the Arts Centre by Bill Clinton and Tony Blair. From Senate House we could see the security staff on the roof of the Arts Centre.

In my time at Warwick, the biggest change I’ve seen is...

The size of the University, it just keeps getting bigger and bigger in terms of income, staff & student numbers, buildings, activities and on it goes.

Warwick's kept me here because...

It’s such a diverse environment to work in. There are always new challenges from an audit perspective; the University never stands still and I come into contact with many individuals from different disciplines and nationalities. Working here is so interesting.

It would be really useful to work more closely with...

All areas of the University - sounds a bit ambitious, but closer interaction between Internal Audit and auditees (effectively all areas of the University) would yield benefits for the University processes and the University as a whole.

The best thing about working at Warwick is...

The diversity of activities and individuals making Warwick such an interesting place to work.

If I could change one thing at the University it would be...

The journey to work, sometimes I am so close and yet so far away as I sit in a queue of traffic on the A45.

My favourite place on campus is...

The Tocil Wood in May when the Bluebells are out. Purple carpet, blue sky, sun out - any excuse to walk from University House to the Medical School or Life Sciences.
