Nick Vaughan-Williams to step down from Vice-Provost role next April

Professor Nick Vaughan-Williams is to step down from his position as Vice-Provost and Chair of the Faculty of Social Sciences in April 2024.

Nick will join the University of Birmingham as Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Social Sciences and will sit on the University Executive Board.

Commenting on the news, our Provost, Professor Emma Flynn, said:

“I know everyone will join me in congratulating Nick on his new role and we wish him every success in the future.

“Nick has contributed so much to Warwick over the last 14 years, including being the Head of the Department of Politics and International Studies, followed by Vice-Provost and Chair of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and leading the Social Sciences Grand Challenge.

“Under his leadership, the faculty has become a truly world-class centre of teaching and research excellence, rising to 40th in the QS World Rankings and consistently rated as one of very best in the UK. The faculty has grown to around 14,000 students and 1,200 staff.

“Nick has also helped guide our ambitious plans for the Social Sciences Grand Challenge, which has progressed through its initial planning phases. Beyond being a brilliant academic and leader, Nick is also a kind, considerate and supportive colleague who people love working with and for.”

Reflecting on his time at Warwick, Nick said he had a deep and personal connection with the University.

“The University of Warwick is a special institution. It has been extremely good to me; I did my Masters degree in PAIS; I was appointed as an Assistant Professor and built my academic career here; I’ve made lifelong friendships and both of my daughters have gone through the University nursery.

“Warwick has always challenged me intellectually and given me the freedom and support to pursue the academic agendas that I see greatest potential in. This is all rare and precious. It is also in very safe hands. Thank you, Warwick”.

Nick will remain in post up until mid-April. The recruitment for his replacement will begin early in the New Year.
