Working securely: the Network Replacement and Security Programme
Learn about a major University-wide investment programme to improve Warwick’s data network and security.
Be aware of a minor disruption to services during the evening of Wednesday 24 June.
As part of our regular Information Security updates, we’d like to share some information and news about an important infrastructure programme.
What is the NRSP?
The Network Replacement and Security Programme (NRSP) is a major University-wide investment to improve Warwick’s data network and security. Running from November 2019 until December 2021, the Programme underlines our strategic objective to have a SMART campus and ensure the University has a network that continues to support the most advanced research, teaching and learning, with strong administrative systems.
The NRSP team is working hard on a series of complex, latest-generation upgrades over the coming months. While many of the benefits are unseen, these projects will significantly enhance the equipment and capability of our network – its security, its resilience and user experience.
Like many universities, we are a target for increasingly sophisticated cyber security attacks. Underpinning all its projects, the Programme is enhancing our capabilities to prevent and manage these, to monitor for threats and to be able to take swift action where risks are detected.
Next step news
Our next step is to migrate to new servers that will bring much greater security and reliability to core network services. This work has been postponed from March due to the Covid-19 lockdown, so in rescheduling, the team has considered both remote working and the exam period for students.
When will this take effect?
The change-over will move or ‘migrate’ all the information contained on current servers to new equipment. It will take place between 6 - 10pm on Wednesday 24 June 2020.
What does this mean for you?
Many users will be unaware of the process. However some staff and students may experience minor difficulties connecting to internal and external services during the evening of 24 June. Disruptions are likely to be for a few minutes only, but there may be several of them during the entire 4-hour period.
