Over the last year you have generously donated £400,000 to the Unrestricted Fund at Warwick which allows us to respond to priorities as they arise. Thank you so much for your contributions! Here is a selection of what your donations will achieve over the coming year…
Your donations will fund pioneering health research including scalp-cooling techniques to prevent hair loss, rated by most cancer patients as the most distressing side effect of chemotherapy. Thanks to you we can help to prevent the physically and psychologically damaging side effects of cancer treatment, thus improving the quality of life for those fighting cancer. Donations are also strengthening our work in reproductive health, exploring treatments to reduce the rates of recurrent miscarriage and help more women give birth to healthy babies.
Donations have increased valuable Electives which enable medical students to explore healthcare in an alternative, and often challenging, setting. Of her 6-week medical elective at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Malawi, one student commented:
I am incredibly privileged to have been able to meet patients and experience health care in a country so different to my home. I feel I have grown a lot and learned things about people and medicine which will positively influence how I practice in future."
SCHOLARSHIPS & PRIZES
Thanks to your donations even more scholarships have been awarded this year, for the Undergraduate Research Scholarship Scheme (URSS) and now the Transatlantic Fellowship Programme enabling doctoral students from varying disciplines to visit the US to undertake research. We’ve created a fourth postgraduate scholarship in Humanities to supplement the three prestigious scholarships generously funded by the Wolfson Foundation.
Your donations also fund Giving to Warwick Prizes in every academic department, promoting and recognising academic excellence. Recognition makes such a difference to the winners!
It's a real pleasure to have won a prize for the second time and to be recognised for the ways in which I draw on my degree to inspire young people. My sincere thanks to everyone who makes this wonderful competition possible - you keep the passion for Philosophy and Literature alive!"
EMPLOYABILITY & VOLUNTEERING
Warwick is always looking for fresh opportunities to support employability, especially in this tough economic climate. Work experience placements are often unpaid and many students cannot afford to carry out this vital part of their career development. Thanks to donations, placement bursaries ensure this experience is available to even more students, regardless of their financial situation. The benefits of these placements are clear – students gain invaluable experience, strengthen their skills and build a contact network that can aid their transition from student to employee.
The bursary allowed me to do this placement, which is of huge importance to my future career, without feeling guilty or having to worry if I will be able to pay the rent next month."
Volunteering is yet another way for our students to broaden their understanding. Your donations will continue to help volunteer projects in local communities through Warwick Volunteers, and abroad through Warwick in Africa (WiA). Volunteering projects not only impact the communities involved, but also the lives of the volunteers themselves. A WiA volunteer said:
The learners teach me more than I teach them. I teach them concepts…they teach me to enjoy everything that happens in life even though you might not understand or like it."
FACILITIES & RESOURCES
Campus facilities are obviously fundamental to student success. Donations have supported more innovative and creative learning spaces across campus using a range of multimedia technology as well as the purchase of additional text books and electronic journals, benefiting students from every department.
The ongoing success of these projects would not be possible without your involvement. Make a donation quickly and securely online to continue making a difference! Thank you so much for your donations - we will continue to update you on the impact of your generosity over the coming year.
