Executive team vlog series: Professor Lorenzo Frigerio
So as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, I oversee the quality and the quality enhancement for the educational provision of the institution. And that means that I already oversee and provide leadership on developing our institutional educational strategy.
I am a biologist and also I am a very passionate scuba diver. In fact, I started scuba diving back in Italy when I was 16, so a very long time ago.
And I absolutely love being, diving on, coral reefs because as a biologist, I am absolutely amazed by the variety and the colours and the amount of life in that particular ecosystem. So that, that is one of the things that makes me really happy.
So the plan for the coming months is to take the lessons from having won our Teaching Excellence Framework Gold Award, which is amazing. And the exercise that we called ITLR, which is the Institutional Teaching and Learning Review, putting together those findings and working out how we can take our amazing education and making it even more amazing.
One of the things that the previous strategy has been very successful in achieving has been bringing the importance and the value and the profile of education on a path with the profile of research at Warwick.
But we can do much, much better than that. And in fact, we can be leaders in education the same way that we are leaders in research.
So the plan will be to develop a new education and student experience strategy, because of course, the student experience is absolutely core to whatever we do. That's our mission. Our mission is to develop the new generations of students into global citizens, which are equipped to tackle the many big challenges that we are facing.
I think we are very lucky because our educators are exceptionally talented and enthusiastic. So that's very important because conveying the passion for a subject is absolutely crucial. And it's kind of the fundamental first step in any student's journey to be carried by the enthusiasm or the people who teach them.
The fact that we say like many other institutions that our education is research led, but we absolutely mean it through a number of initiatives. Every student at Warwick has many opportunities to get involved with real world research, not just the research that gets taught as part of say, practicals, or seminars, or workshops, but real pieces of research.
So collaborating with our academics to work on real world problems. So I think giving students the opportunity to get involved with research is something that we do very well.
And that's, I think, what makes us unique.
Professor Lorenzo Frigerio, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), tells us about his role at Warwick and his plan for the Education and Student Experience strategy. We also get a sneak peek of his scuba diving adventures!
