Dr Robert Pettifer Sets New Record
Dr Robert Pettifer, of the Department of Physics, has set a new record in measuring atomic displacements. The new record, set by Robert and co-workers at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, measured atomic displacements one hundred times smaller than ever before (1 femtometre).
Appointment - Dr Hilary Hearnshaw
Dr Hilary Hearnshaw, Deputy Director of the Centre for Primary Health Care (CPHC) and Reader in Health in the Community, has been appointed to the Medical Research Council Advisory Board (Medical Advisory Board).
Maths Professor Awarded JD Crawford Prize
Professor Dwight Barkley, of the Mathematics Institute and the Centre for Scientific Computing, has been awarded the 2005 JD Crawford Prize by the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) for his development of numerical algorithms for pattern formation phenomena in spatially extended dynamical systems.
Statistics Professor Receives £198,000 for Epilepsy Project
Professor Jane Hutton, from the Department of Statistics, has been awarded £198,000 from the Medical Research Council for an epilepsy project. Professor Hutton's study will concentrate on developing statistical models for the link between how well patients respond in clinical trials and patients' decisions to enter studies. This will help to provide better information on treatments and side effects.
Election - Dr Toby Mottram
Dr Toby Mottram, Reader in the School of Engineering, has been elected to the Council of the Institution of Structural Engineers. This follows a recent ballot among the Institution's 15,000 full members, spread over 100 countries. Dr Mottram takes up his place on the Council for three years from the beginning of the 2005-06 session in October.
