Brief Encounter with Phil Martin

Originally published 28 October 2003

Phil joined the University recently as the new Director of IT Services. He has come directly from the University of Cardiff but his career history includes big names in the private sector including Reebok and IBM. He made the switch to working in the University sector because he was motivated by the challenge and interested in the increasingly commercial nature of education.

Life before Warwick

Until recently I was Director of Information Services at Cardiff University, which included responsibility for the Library. Before that I worked as a Chief Information Officer (IS/IT Director) in a variety of global companies including Reebok and the Rolex Group.

Prior to that I was an IT Management Consultant working for “Big 6” accountancy firms, having started my career with IBM UK.

Lifelong ambition

To live in one house for more than five years.

People are always surprised to learn this about me, but...

I am the 18th largest shareholder in Carlisle United FC.

Major achievement to date?

Saving grammar schools from closure. I was a governor of one of the two academically excellent schools in Altrincham, and proved to central government that the student number forecasts were wrong and that the schools should remain open.

Which person inspires you most, and why?

Tim Smit, founder of the Eden Project. I heard him speak recently and found his ideas on innovation, education, teambuilding and people management inspiring.
