Maureen Freely the most inspiring person I have met during my 30-year academic career. Brilliant in her own work, sensitive and empathetic in her manner, she is has shaped my career positively in countless ways with a small word here or there, an idea or a smile. I could write about the qualities of her fiction writing, or the perceptiveness of her translations, or the prestige she commands in her field, but really it is the way in which she is always attuned to others - attuned to what they seem to need at a particular moment - that stands out.
