Vicki Squire, Professor of International Politics in the Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS), has been named as one of 74 new Fellows of the distinguished Academy of Social Sciences. Fellowship of the Academy is one of the highest honours in UK social science, awarded to leading researchers, policy specialists, and practitioners.

Internationally recognised for her research on borders, migration, citizenship, and humanitarianism, Professor Squire’s work has shaped public understanding of the displacement of people across multiple regions. Her research has also informed international policy debates on the dynamics of global migration.

Vicki Squire, Professor of International Politics, University of Warwick, said: “I am deeply honoured to be elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. As the world spirals into deepened conflict and insecurities, social scientific research on the human impacts of such developments has never been more critical.

“I look forward to supporting the Academy’s work in advancing understanding of these issues so that we can collectively work toward a better future in which each life is valued.”

Professor Squire’s research spans multiple regions and contexts. Her current project, Data Literacies in Displacement and Humanitarian Settings, draws on research with ‘internally displaced persons’ in north-eastern Nigeria and South Sudan funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Her most recent book, Making and Unmaking Global Citizenship: Lived Experiences of Precarious Migration, was published by Edinburgh University Press in 2025.

Wider scholarly contributions include Professor Squire featuring on BBC Radio 4’s Thinking Allowed programme discussing Syrian refugee experiences of resettlement, contributing to the Imperial War Museum’s Refugees: Forced to Flee exhibition with her research on the European ‘migration crisis’, and writing for The Conversation on the importance of humanitarian data in the face of aid cuts.

At Warwick, Professor Squire serves as Deputy Head of Department and Director of Research for Politics and International Studies (PAIS), and as Co-Convenor of the Borders, Race, Ethnicity and Migration network.

Will Hutton FAcSS, President, Academy of Social Sciences, said: “I’m delighted to welcome these leading social scientists to the Academy’s Fellowship this spring. Their substantial contributions have furthered knowledge and our understanding in tackling a wide range of societal challenges including working with Indigenous communities in the Arctic to better understand climate risk, memory retrieval processes in legal contexts, social inequalities, economic policy and tackling hate crime. We look forward to working with them to further promote the important role the social sciences play in our lives.”

Fellows are selected from across the UK and internationally following independent peer review for the excellence, impact, and wider public benefit of their work.

The spring 2026 Fellows’ cohort have been elected from 39 UK organisations, and from countries beyond the UK including Australia, the Czech Republic, Finland, and Ireland.
