Professor Don Pollacco on the Geminid Meteor Shower

Professor Don Pollacco from the University of Warwick said, "The evening of Friday 13th December sees the maximum of one of the best meteor showers of the year - the Geminids. In fact the maximum rate of meteors will be in the early hours of Saturday 14th December and could reach 150 bright meteors an hour. This places this shower alongside the Perseids in August as the two best annual meteor showers visible from the UK. Despite this, the Geminids is less well known and observed probably because of the weather conditions this time of year discouraging casual observers. This year, conditions are less than ideal as we have a near full moon which will obscure some of the fainter meteors. Still, this shower is always worth a look so if the weather is favourable, wrap up warm and go out in the early hours on Saturday with a reclining chair and look to the south and high in the sky. Once your eyes become adapted to the darkness you should become aware of the occasional meteor but be patient, remember "good things come to those who wait"!"
