Warwick Medical School Celebrates 10th Anniversary
Warwick Medical School (WMS), originally established as part of a partnership with Leicester Medical School, celebrated 10 years of achievement in September.
Dean of the Medical School Professor Peter Winstanley said: “So much has been achieved in such a short space of time and we look forward to building on that success in the future. It is an exciting time to be Dean at Warwick Medical School.”
The School has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2000, and is now the largest graduate entry-only medical school in the UK. It has taken on around 1,400 students since its inception, about 50% of who go on to work in the local NHS.
A year after WMS’s inauguration, the Medical Teaching Centre opened on the Gibbet Hill campus. This is a purpose-built centre for the University’s medical students, with facilities that include mock consulting rooms, clinical skills rooms, a lecture theatre, and 24/7 IT suite.
The first Dean of WMS, Professor Yvonne Carter, one of the best known medical academics of recent times, was appointed in 2004. This was followed by the formal establishment of the Clinical Trials Unit, which quickly won £5million in grants for clinical trials in cancer and emergency care. Last year saw the completion of the new Clinical Trials Unit building at Gibbet Hill.
In 2007 WMS formally dissolved its partnership with the University of Leicester and was granted independent degree-awarding status. It also became the first new Medical School to join a Strategic Partnership with the Medical Research Council. The School is ranked in the top ten UK medical schools for its health services research.
Last year saw the official opening of the Surgical Training Centre - a centre of excellence in national and international specialist surgical training and anatomy teaching. The Centre is a partnership between WMS and University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire, and is designed to deliver training to undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and allied health professionals, preparing the surgeons and doctors of the future.
Professor Peter Winstanley – formally Head of the School of Clinical Sciences at Liverpool - took over as the new Dean of WMS in May 2010.
