Staff from Warwick Diabetes Care, the branch of the Warwick Medical School who specialise in medical education for diabetes specialists, have been selected to give two of the most prestigious lectures for primary healthcare professionals.

Senior Teaching Fellow, Dave McAughey, and Medical Advisor, Roger Gadsby, have been selected from a number of respected nominees to give keynote lectures at the Diabetes UK Annual Professional Conference.

The prestigious Named Lectures are a series of six sessions that serve to highlight the outstanding work and achievements of those working in diabetes care and research. With two of the six being awarded this year to members of Warwick Diabetes Care, it demonstrates the world-class reputation that the centre has developed for itself since its launch in November 2000.

Dave McAughey will give the Janet Kinson Lecture. This session is awarded specifically for services to diabetes education.

Dave is a registered nurse and has had over 20 years as a diabetes specialist. He is a former trustee of Diabetes UK and in 1992 was elected as Chair of the Royal College of Nursing, Diabetes Nursing Forum. Dave joined Warwick in October 2002 and has been a key contributor to the development of both the centre at Warwick, and the field of diabetes education.

Roger Gadsby will give the Mary MacKinnon Lecture. This session is awarded to a healthcare professional working part or full time in primary care.

Roger is a practising GP in Nuneaton and has worked in many areas of medical education. He joined Warwick in 1992 where he helped develop the Certificate in Primary Diabetes Care and the Primary Care Management Program. He is Chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners Midland Faculty Board and Treasurer of the Primary Care Diabetes Group.

Mary MacKinnon is also connected with Warwick University as one of the founders of Warwick Diabetes Care. Her expertise has been recognised globally through her work with the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organisation.

Dave McAughey has expressed his delight at being selected to give the lecture. “These lectures are regarded as highly prestigious in the healthcare sector. I am proud to have been nominated.”

The lectures will be given at the Diabetes UK Annual Conference to be held in March 2004 at the International Conference Centre in Birmingham.
