What IT Services Can Do For You

Originally Published 07 May 2004

From system support to broadband connections, IT Services runs a number of schemes, as well as providing training, to ensure that you get the most from them during your time at University.
The Campus Service Point, run by Norsk Data and situated in the basement of the IT Services building, can provide ‘hands on’ help with your computer. If you live on campus or in one of the Managed Houses with the Broadband service, you can use this service for free - simply call the warwickpiazza help desk on 024 7657 5000 to make an appointment. Alternatively, you can buy a year of System Support cover for just £25.85.

If you’re thinking of buying a new computer, it’s worth looking at the Student Computer Purchase Scheme, which allows students to buy specially discounted ‘Warwick Ready’ IBM computers. These computers come pre-installed with ‘Warwick Ready’ software and are tested for ease of connection to the network and Internet using the connections in campus bedrooms, the Wireless Hotspots and the Managed Houses. All computers come with three years of Warranty and Norsk Data System Support cover. Good discounts on a whole range of computer peripherals and consumables are also available.

All campus accommodation has broadband network access. The warwickpiazza network has been running for nearly three years and provides connections for all 6,000 rooms on campus. 155 of the University Managed Houses also now have Broadband Service installed. This allows an ‘always-on’ broadband ADSL connection to the internet, wireless connection from all the major rooms of the house, the whole household being able to connect at the same time and a BT line and handset that can be used for incoming and outgoing emergency telephone calls as well as the ADSL service.

The warwickpiazza helpdesk provides an extensive service which includes free help with getting your computer configured correctly at the campus Service Point, as well as free fix or replacement of any faulty internet equipment. An engineer will respond to a call out within four hours and visit by the end of the next working day if necessary. This service has been operational for a year and IT Services and the Accommodation Office are now working with the Students’ Union to see what improvements can be made.

Training is also an important part of IT Services. A number of courses are offered throughout the year, ranging from the use of Microsoft Office to more specialised areas such as Photoshop and Digital Photography. For details of available courses, visit http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/its/training/courses/students/. All courses are free but places must be booked. It is also possible to gain credits for IT competence through the European Computer Driving Licence and the Warwick Skills Programme.
