In a fantastical display of multimedia pyrotechnics, Warwick Arts Centre brings an extravagant reworking of the Aladdin story for the third millennium to its stage this week. This fast-moving show replaces the magic lamp with an automatic dialler and sets the tale in an international call centre in Bangalore.

Alladeen mixes video, live performance, animation and electronic music on a huge architectural set, creating a dazzling MTV-style visual spectacle.

“Entertaining and illuminating... truly a phenomenon of 2003” The Times

Conceived and designed by the award winning, motiroti, in collaboration with New York's OBIE award winning performance and media company The Builders Association; Alladeen skilfully portrays the great global cultural meltdown. In some scenes, for instance, Indian operators learn to neuter their mother tongue and paper over possible cultural differences by learning some useless facts and picking up buzz words from episodes of Buffy, Frasier and Friends. They even take on names such as Monica and Joey to fool the punters as they give directions and spiritual assistance to callers thousands of miles away.

"Brilliant pop theatre marriage of East West." The Guardian
