'No Paradise without Banks' - The recession in Latin America

Warwick Business School is hosting a free public forum on the impact of the recession in Latin America on the 2nd June, led by José Juan Ruiz Gómez of the Santander Group.

'No Paradise without Banks' will look at how the current crisis is being felt in Latin America by looking at its origins, the problem of leveraging, consequences and the impact in Latin America as well as the problems faced on the road to recovery.

Sr Gómez is the Director of Analysis and Strategy at the Santander Group and the forum is part of the Santander Universities Partnership which Warwick signed in November 2008.

The Partnership is an agreement in which the University has joined the Santander Universities network of higher education institutions in the UK, Europe and Latin America, to establish contacts and develop research and teaching links.

Since gaining his BA (Economics) from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 1983, Sr Gómez has played an influential role as an economic advisor to the Spanish government and then as President of the European Union Economic Politics Committee with responsibility for the relations of Spain with the OECD, IMF and the World Bank.

In 1993 he took the position of Chief Economist of the Banking Corporation of Spain, Argentaria and actively participated in its flotation on the Spanish Stock Exchange. In 1996 he became Head of Strategy, Communications and Shareholder Relations at Banco Santander. He rose to his current position following the merger of Banco Santander and Banco Central Hispano.

In addition to his role in Santander, Señor Gómez has found time for regular columns in the newspaper Expansion focusing on macroeconomics and economic policy and the business supplement of El Pais.

He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Scientific Board of the Elcano Royal Institute and President of the Social Committee of the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha.

The forum begins at 6.30pm in room B1.16 of Warwick Business School. There will also be the opportunity to network with alumni, students and guests following the presentation over a light buffet and drinks.
