Student Volunteers take on a 'Big Challenge'

Student volunteers will face a ‘Big Challenge’ this weekend when they attempt to complete four different volunteer projects at various locations across the city.

The Big Challenge is an annual one-day volunteering event to celebrate National Student Volunteering Week. Almost 100 students from Warwick Volunteers and Horizon Volunteering at Coventry University will be joining together on Sunday 24th February for this year’s event.

The projects this year are:

  • Re-decorating the School Hall at Limbrick Wood School, Tile Hill
  • Shrub clearance on the fishery and dam wall at Coombe Abbey Country Park
  • Re-decorating the changing rooms at Frederick Bird Primary School, City Centre
  • Painting and decorating at Whoberley Hall Primary School, Whoberley

Big Challenge 2007 involved painting and decorating the sports hall at Stoke Heath Primary School; re-decorating the school reception area at Stanton Bridge Primary with a bright and welcoming mural; coppicing at Coombe Abbey Country Park; and creating an outdoor learning space at Holbrook Primary School for children to grow their own plants and vegetables.

Pam Timms, Deputy Head Teacher, Stoke Heath Primary School said; "The hall looks wonderful. The children were very surprised and are very pleased. The staff also love it and are impressed that the students completed it in such a short time. Many thanks for your involvement, and congratulations to the whole team". -

Marilyn Stuart, Head Teacher, Stanton Bridge Primary School said; "The frieze is really great much admired by all who came through the door this morning – thank you so much!  Please convey my thanks to all involved".

Mike Doyle, Big Challenge volunteer 2007 said; "Thank you for organising the Big Challenge. Fun was had by all and I personally really enjoyed doing something different with my weekend".
