Universities Week 2012

Universities Week 2012 takes place from 30th April – 7th May and will see universities across the UK taking part in events and activities to showcase the excellence and the achievements of our universities, students, staff and alumni.

Universities Week is coordinated by Universities UK and British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS)

Now in its third year, Universities Week 2012 will focus on the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and will culminate in the BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships, which will be held in the Olympic Stadium as part of the London Prepares series.

The campaign highlights the work that universities are providing in bringing the Games to London, and of course Warwick is no exception.

Last summer Warwick played host to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) for the process of interviewing thousands of volunteers for the Games Maker programme, and in the autumn the Coca-Cola Olympic Torch Tour visited campus to find inspirational young people to take up the Olympic flame. Some of our students have been selected for this particular honour, including Richard Salter (first-year, Computer and Business Studies undergraduate) and Holly Parker (third-year, Theatre & Performance Studies undergraduate) who will be carrying the flame on its journey to the Opening Ceremony in London via Yeovil and Alcester respectively.

Finally, Warwick has been designated as an official training centre during the Games, and will be welcoming the world’s top footballers onto its pitches at Gibbet Hill for practice in the run-up to matches in Coventry.
