Warwick was rewarded for its long-term energy conservation efforts at a recent awards evening at Imperial College, hosted by television presenter, Kate Humble.

The Green Gown Awards recognise exceptional initiatives being taken by universities and colleges across the UK to become more sustainable. Shortlisted in both carbon reduction and continual improvement (specific area) categories, Warwick was highly commended for its efforts to optimise the campus-wide energy efficient combined heat and power (CHP) and district heating network.

The University’s CHP system has been delivering energy and environmental efficiencies since its introduction in 2001. Recent enhancements have included extending the network into new and refurbished buildings and the provision of thermal stores to help satisfy peak demand requirements. In 2007-08, when contrasted with conventional techniques, the system resulted in savings of 8,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and more than £1 million.

The judging panel praised the initiative for not only the introduction of a major environmentally beneficial system, but also its subsequent modification, adaptation and enhancement to drive environmental improvements.
