Warwick Commended for Student-Built Wind Turbine

Students at the Green Gown Awards CeremonyThe University was highly commended at this year's Green Gown Awards, thanks to the work of the student engineering society Engineers Without Borders, supported, and partially funded, by Estates Office staff.

The team designed, constructed, and installed a 1kW wind turbine, and connected it to the grid so that it could help power an Estates maintenance building, reducing Warwick's carbon emissions.

The turbine provided the students with a technological challenge, taught them about real-world issues like planning permissions and health and safety regulations, and created something that the Engineering Department can use to drive their research into renewable energy technologies.

The judging panel praised the project as an example of how students can work with their University's Estates team to complete beneficial projects.
