A Warwick University Medical student is planning a 500 mile walk through Northern Spain to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Frances Paine, a first year medical student, will be walking the El Camino de Santiago (The Way of Saint James), a 1,000 year old pilgrimage that ends at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. The trek itself will take approximately 35 days, with nights spent at church run hostels.

Mal Haddon, area volunteer for Cancer Research UK, said: "We’re thrilled Frances has chosen to raise money to help to cure and treat local people. Without this support the local research would not be accessed by oncologists nationally and the work would not continue."

Frances was inspired to help by her time spent as a health care assistant on various oncology wards. She said: "I have seen many, many times how cancer does not just affect the life of the patient, but also those around them too. I chose the Camino as it is something I have always wanted to do. 506 miles will give me a long time to think and will hopefully help me really appreciate the simple things in life, such as my health."

While she has paid for the trip herself, she has also organised additional events at Warwick Medical School to raise more money for the charity.
