Warwick Submarine scoops prize at European competition
A submarine designed and built by engineering students at the University of Warwick has brought home a prize from a European racing competition.
The Warwick Submarine team won ‘Best Design Report’, when they raced their human-powered submarine Godiva 2 against other university teams at the European International Submarine Race (eISR) at QinetiQ’s Ocean Basin facility in Gosport, Hampshire in July.
The Warwick Sub Project consists of a team of six undergraduate Engineering students from a variety of disciplines. The team has access to cutting edge engineering research from both WMG and the School of Engineering, both academic departments at the University of Warwick.
The eISR competition is a design challenge to build and race a one- or two-person, human powered submarine on an underwater course, competing against other top class universities from around the world.Project Director Dr Ian Tuersley is very pleased with the result:
“This is the third year that we have entered the ISR competition, both in the US and in Europe, and once again the team have returned with a major prize. This is particularly pleasing as we are up against teams that have a great deal more experience in the competition, from institutions that have greater subject specialisation that we do.”
“However, Warwick is now firmly established as a competitive force to be reckoned with and as our experience grows we anticipate further success. This year’s entire team performed magnificently to achieve this result,” Dr Tuersley comments.
The team also benefits from the supervision and guidance of Mr Nigel Denton and Emeritus Professor John Flower of WMG.
The project is made possible through the generous aid of a wide range of sponsors and technical partners, including: Concept Group International, Stratasys, WMG, the University of Warwick’s Innovative Manufacturing GRP, HVM Catapult, DIAB, Bosch-Rexroth Group, 3M and Apeks Aqualung.
