Ping! is a collaborative performance piece between The Coull Quartet and Fusion Table Tennis Club. The surreal spectacle sees The Coull Quartet playing music to the sound and rhythm of table tennis. The all-ages event at Warwick Arts Centre was entertaining, enjoyable and thought-provoking.
Composed by Joe Cutler, whose music has been performed in over 30 countries and on six continents, Ping! was initially the brainchild of his brother Tom, a leading England table tennis player. Ping! marries both siblings’ passions together in a project that has been in the making for a number of years.
Following on from the premiere of Ping! at Warwick Arts Centre on Saturday 3 March, a video of the performance was screened at the Birmingham Hippodrome on Tuesday 13 March as part of the West Midlands Cultural Olympiad programme.
Fusion Table Tennis Club is a South London based table tennis club that has become one of the largest and most successful clubs in the UK.
The Coull Quartet are resident at the University of Warwick, giving a regular concert series at the Arts Centre, and being fully involved with the musical life of the university. They perform throughout the UK and abroad, with an extensive tour to Brazil planned for October this year. They can also be regularly heard at venues throughout the West Midlands, in programmes which range from the great quartet repertoire of Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn to the many new works they have commissioned over the years.
