The City in Motion: A View from the Bicycle

Jon Shapiro Anjaria, Brandeis University

This paper explores the possibilities of an ethnography in motion. Social mobility has served as a powerful trope in the humanities and social sciences, however, relatively little has been written about actual movement in the city. Drawing from initial fieldwork with cyclists and bicycle activists in Mumbai and cities elsewhere in India, I show how a mobility is not simply an effect, intermediary practice, but productive of cultural and political forms in its own right.
